In 1692, Puritan-led Salem becomes the site of hysteria and witchcraft accusations, sparked by a group of young women.

Arthur Miller’s Tony Award-winning play “The Crucible” depicting that story will be performed at Missouri Baptist University starting Thursday, Feb. 16.

Brandon Riley, cast as the main protagonist John Proctor, said the challenges in rehearsing this play were “due to the material and the connection everyone must have to the characters. It takes a total commitment.”

“For the performances, we're using a type of arena stage that has the audience on multiple sides, close to the stage,” said Brittany Hastings, who plays Elizabeth Procter. “We, as actors, will be able to feed off audience energy but also have to concentrate even harder.”

Director Joy Powell and Assistant Director Sarah Dickey, along with a cast of MBU students, have been dedicated to transforming this play on the MBU stage.

“I hope people understand the value to produce that level of drama on campus,” Powell said.

Powell pinpointed this play as powerful. In light of McCarthyism and accusations against Communists in Miller’s day, “The Crucible” contains a deeper meaning for that generation and for all of humanity.

“You have to examine history in order to not repeat it,” Powell said about the message of this play.

“The Crucible” will be performed in Pillsbury Chapel Feb. 16-18 at 7:30 p.m. and Feb. 19 at 2 p.m.

Tickets are on sale in the MBU box office or can be purchased at the door for MBU students at $2.50, faculty and staff at $7.50 and $10 for general admission.
