ThePerk: The Event was a time for community, music and coffee – lots of coffee.

Students, faculty, staff and alumni packed Muncy Gym Jan. 20. Students who cheered on the Spartans at the men’s volleyball game preceding the event were admitted for free, making attending this year’s Perk even more appealing.

With the lights dimmed and the music rocking, event-goers took advantage of the free sweets and coffee and struck a pose in the photo booth.

From 9 p.m. to midnight, the live music didn’t stop, starting and finishing with senior Isaiah Barnfield’s band Team Up. After revving up the show with two original pop-punk compositions, the group closed out the night with Jon Mark McMillan’s worship staple, “How He Loves.”

Other performers included students Brian Tachick, Sarah Turner, Jessica Petit and Lucas Donnelley, who each performed in multiple acts.

Tachick, senior, played keyboard accompanying alum Davy McVicker for his original song, “Hesitate.”

“[The song] means a lot to him,” Tachick said. “I was there when he wrote it.”

McVicker’s performance was part of a common theme: alumni returning to not only attend, but also perform.

Fellow MBU graduate Harry Walls followed suit, playing his original song “Middle of It All.” Walls concluded his set with Adele’s, “Turning Tables,” winning the crowd over despite some brief technical difficulties.

“There’s always a little performer in us all,” Walls said in an email. “And so when we get the chance to show that, we take advantage.”

Walls stepped away from the mic, providing piano for the night’s next performer, alumna Liz Hitt, who sang Hillsong United’s, “None But Jesus.”

“ThePerk was a success,” said Amanda Ely, Student Activities vice president. “It was a great night of fun and fellowship with old and new MBU students.”
